Des Moines Yacht Club First Mates Award Navigating the Future

Scholarships at Dollars for Scholars Reception

Three outstanding Mt. Rainier graduating students received Des Moines Yacht Club First Mates Navigating the Future scholarships during the annual Des Moines Dollars for Scholars Awards Reception on May 26, 2021. Following social distancing guidelines, this year’s ceremony was held outdoors at the Des Moines Activity Center, where many local and civic leaders welcomed the students and their families. Judging by all the smiles, students enjoyed the unusual celebration, but the First Mates hope to carry on their tradition of hosting this reception at the Des Moines Yacht Club!

Since 2009, the First Mates have awarded 42 scholarships, for a total of $37,500. Scholarships are made possible through the hard work of fundraisers and through a gift-giving program, where donations may be made in honor of an individual or to honor the memory of the individual. This scholarship fund is a 501C3 charitable organization, which allows a tax write-off for donors, and an opportunity for many companies to match contributions.

The First Mates and Des Moines Yacht Club support academic success in the community. Their scholarship fund reflects pride in students and a huge commitment to their ongoing education.

First Mates Navigating the Future Scholarship committee members are: Shelly Arch, Sheila Dahlgren, Joy Feider, Trish Keenan, Patti Linscott, Mindy McClean and Marilee Wamsley. For more information, please email Patti Linscott at scholar@desmoinesyachtclub.com
