Lighted Boat Parade 2020 video

On the first Saturday of December, the Des Moines Yacht Club has traditionally hosted a Lighted Boat Parade. This year, Three Tree Point Yacht Club, Poverty Bay Power Squadron/America’s Boating Club, and Marina Tenants joined boats from DMYC.

Turnout this year was outstanding, with 21 boats participating. In the lead position was a spectacularly decorated “Viajera,” captained by Vice Commodore Denny Ertler. The parade started at the Marina Pier and proceeded north to Three Tree Point, then south past the Marina and on to Redondo.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions this year, the Waterland Blog shared a Facebook Live video feed of boats leaving the Marina. This allowed people to watch the lighted boats from the safety of their homes. In addition, Destination Des Moines and its partners promoted the parade in their “Lighting Up the Waves” poster, distributed via social media.

The Lighted Boat Parade continues to be a great holiday activity for DMYC and the City of Des Moines.
